Sacher-Masoch Torte (100% Pure Chocolate and Redcurrant Pleasure)
Desserts & Pastries/My Vienna - Freud & Food/Vegan

Sachertorte Variation: The Sacher-Masoch Cake — A Masochist’s Confection of Memory, Contradiction, and the Jewish Soul of Vienna (Whole-Food Plant-Based, Vegan, SOS-free)

Welcome!

I'm Nino Shaye Weiss, an unrstrained foodnik kibbitzing (i.e., blogging) from Vienna—a city steeped in history and culture, once both loved and loathed by Sigmund Freud. Vienna has long been home to celebrated Jewish thinkers and artists: Theodor Herzl, Gustav Mahler, Viktor Frankl, Martin Buber, Stefan Zweig, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Arnold Schoenberg, Erich von Stroheim, and more.

This blog is a private, non-profit endeavor—a true family affair. When I say “we,” I mean not just myself but:

 • My wife, whose discerning palate and sharp insights guide our culinary adventures;
 • Our children, loyal (if occasionally unconsenting) taste-testers;
 • And our guests, who become, willingly or not, part of our gastronomic experiments.

Together, we endeavor to pay tribute to both these famous figures and the anonymous Jew of pre-Shoah Jewish Vienna. By digging into memory’s kitchen, we explore their once-rich, now-vanished food traditions—from Italian and Hungarian influences to Bohemian and Galician—uncovering their eclectic flavors and unique stories.

This is our virtual kitchen.
Think of it as armchair therapy for a fictional restaurant, where Freud-inflected musings mingle as we savor lost flavors and recover forgotten stories of Jewish Viennese cuisine.
